It is defined as sequence of categories in a decreasing or increasing order from kingdom to species and vice versa. Kingdom is the highest rank followed by division, class, order, family, genus and species.

Taxanomic hierachy is the arrangement of various categories in succesive levels of the biological classification.Each of this level or hierarchy is known as the taxanomic category or rank.They are also known as linnaean hierachy .
The hierarchy has two categories - The obligate and intermediate.
✔Obligate means they are follow strictly and range from kingdom to species.
✔Intermediate are not followed strictly and they are added in obligate list such as subdivision , superfamily , suborder etc.
