Tense is a verb form that shows the time of an action, event or state, by a change in its form and / or the use of a helping verb. Examples: works, see, will call, is standing, have gone, looked.

English verbs can refer to present,past or future time.

For each kind of time, there are four possibilities with most verbs.

In Practical English Usage the term ‘tense ’ is used for all verb forms and structures that indicate time.

There are three main times or tenses in English.

The Present Tense

The Past Tense

The Future Tense

Each of these three tenses has four forms which denote various shades of meaning.

Present Tense:

Simple or indefinite present, Present continuous or present progressive , present perfect and present perfect continuous.

Past Tense:

Simple Past or past indefinite; Past Continuous; Past Perfect and Past Perfect Continuous.

Future Tense:

Simple or indefinite future; Future Continuous; Future Perfect and Future Perfect Continuous.
