In government, unicameralism (Latin uni, one + camera, chamber) is the practice of having one legislative or parliamentary chamber. Thus, a unicameral parliament or unicameral legislature is a legislature which consists of one chamber or house.

A Unicameral Legislature can be defined as

1) Unicameral Legislature are usually established in countries with unitary form of government.

2) It has the potential to enact legislation more rapidly or faster as draft legislation will not move from one house to another, a process that can sometimes ‘kill’ some draft legislation or cause delay.

3) Could ensure greater accountability since legislation in one chamber cannot blame legislation fails to pass or if the interests of citizens are ignored in a legislation.

4) Fewer legislators overall, hence fewer legislators or elected officials to monitor by the people and civil society.

5) Fewer legislators, hence reduced cost of government.
