Verbs Definition:-

A verb is a doing word that shows an action, an event or a state. A sentence may either have a main verb, a helping verb or both. In other words, a verb is a word that informs about an action, an existence of something or an occurrence. The verb is the main word in a sentence. No sentence can be completed without a verb.

The word 'verb' derived from the Latin word 'verbum'.

kinds of Verbs

  1. Main Verbs (or Action Verbs)
  2. Helping Verbs
  3. Linking Verbs
  4. Transitive Verbs
  5. Intransitive Verbs

Main Verbs

Main verbs or action verbs are used to express action; something that an animal, a person or a thing does. In each of the following sentences, we only have a main verb.

Example:-

  • The sun shines.
  • The horse neighs.
  • The monkey jumps.

Helping Verbs

A helping verb is a verb that comes before the main verb (or lexical verb) in a sentence. Together the helping verb and the main verb form a verb phrase. (A helping verb is also known as an auxiliary verb.)

As the name suggests, Helping verbs help or support the main verb.

Example:-

  • We are learning about helping verbs. (are: helping verb; learning: main verb)
  • We are in the Green House Club. (are: helping verb)
  • You should complete the work by tomorrow. (should: helping verb; complete: main verb)

Linking Verbs

A verb shows the power of action, and it also can connect ideas. And these verbs are called "Linking Verbs", and if we want to call it vastly then we consider them as "a state of being verbs".

Example:-

  • The tomato smells rotten.
  • The professor is absolutely sure.
  • My brother gets mad when he’s hungry.
  • Lean was tired until the caffeine kicked in.
  • The company stays true to its founding principles.

Transitive Verbs

A transitive verb is a type of action verb that links the subject with the object (a person or a thing) of a sentence, which is receiving the action. The word “transitive” is derived from a Latin word trans, which means to “go across.”

Example:-

  • Gucci returned the documents to the administrator.
  • The students are playing
  • The director discussed marketing strategies offered in the advertisement.
  • Mariam gave her brother a mobile phone.
  • Alex sent a letter from Canada.
  • My Mother gave me a gift on my birthday

Intransitive Verbs

An intransitive verb does not have an object. In the following sentences, cry, work, laugh, and talk are intransitive verbs:

  • The baby was crying.
  • I work for a large firm in Paris.
  • They laughed uncontrollably.
  • We talked for hours.
