A writ is a formal written order issued by Supreme Court and the High Courts to provide legal remedies to individuals who do not obtain adequate protection against ordinary laws.
Some important writs are:

ii) Mandamus
iii) Writ of Prohibition
iv) Writ of Certiorari
v) Quo-warranto.

Answer:

  • Writ is an authority given to the court to issue direction to the government to protect and enforce any construction right.
  • It is an inherent power given to court.
  • The court can ' suo moto' ( on its own motion) take cognizance of a violation of fundamental rights.
