Sickle cell disease and sickle cell trait. Hemoglobin diseases are a group of blood disorders passed down through families in which there is an abnormal production or structure of the hemoglobin protein. These hemoglobinopathies are inherited single gene disorders.

A hemoglobin abnormality is a variant form of hemoglobin that is often inherited and may cause a blood disorder (hemoglobinopathy). Hemoglobin is the iron-containing protein compound within red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout the body.

There are 3 types of hemoglobin abnormalities, they are:-

1)Hemoglobin A (Hb A), which is 95-98% of hemoglobin found in adults,

2) Hemoglobin A2 (Hb A2), which is 2-3% of hemoglobin found in adults, and

3)Hemoglobin F (Hb F), which is found in adults up to 2.5% and is the primary hemoglobin that is produced by the fetus during pregnancy.
