it was in 1794 when the Convection, the newly elected assembly passed a law to free all the slaves in French overseas possessions.but this lasted for only 10 years because when Napoleon Bonaparte became the emperor of France in 1804 ,he introduced slavery .Finally slavery was abolished in the French colonies in 1848 .
