Answer:

Heat Transfer by Thermal Radiation

Heat transfer from a body with a high temperature to a body with a lower temperature, when bodies are not in direct physical contact with each other or when they are separated in space, is called heat radiation [1], as schematically shown in Fig. 3.1. All physical substances in solid, liquid, or gaseous states can emit energy via a process of electromagnetic radiation because of vibrational and rotational movement of their molecules and atoms [2]. The intensity of such energy flux depends upon the temperature of the body and the nature of its surface [3]. The radiation occurs at all temperatures, with the rate of emission increasing with the temperature.

Answer:

Heat transfer by thermal radiation is transfer of heat by electromagnetic waves. It is different from conduction and convection as it requires no matter or medium to be present. The radiative energy will pass perfectly through vacuum as well as clear air.

Application of Heat Radiation:

1. We wear white or light-coloured clothes in summer because they are poor absorbers and good reflectors of heat. This way they keep us cool. On the contrary, we prefer to wear dark-coloured clothes in winters because they absorb most of the heat of sun and keep our body warm.
