AC current or alternating current as on ought to call it alternates(like a wave) and thus can be transported over a long distance. Have you ever seen a capacitor? It is used to store energy and supply it to the appliance when AC current alternates to the trough in order to keep it running. DC current is the exact opposite. it doesn't alternate between crest and troughs but provides steady power. DC current has it own drawbacks as it cannot be transported over a long distance.

A current having uniform direction can be termed as DC current.
-------------
A current which have no specific direction to flow can be termed as AC current.
------------
Now let's talk about the differences-

1) The graph of DC current is always a straight line while the graph of an AC current oscillates from its maximum to minimum value.

2) DC current is a simple function while AC current is an harmonic function.

3) DC current can be calculated as (Total Voltage / Total Resistance) while AC current can be calculated as i = i•sinwt where i• is peak value of current.
------------
Let's peep into the history, AC vs DC was once a matter of pride for these two scientists Tesla and Edison.
