Accelerated eutrophication and two consequences of this phenomenon.

Explanation:

  • The enrichment of lakes and streams with phosphates and nitrates as run off from agricultural lands is called accelerated eutrophication.
  • Consequences of eutrophication

              1) Due to the presence of mat of algae on the surface of water body the penetration of light inside the water body is hindered resulting in reduced productivity of plants which further results in lesser release of oxygen.

             2) When algae dies then the decomposer which decomposes algae requires more oxygen and thus dissolved oxygen decreases which leads to death of fishes and other organism residing in water bodies.
