Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity with time.
Suppose a body is moving with a speed of 15m/s and in the next second it's speed increased to 20m/s
And in the third second it's speed again increases to 25m/s. You can notice that with every passing second there is increase in the body's speed, and this is what we call acceleration.
15m/s -------- 20m/s -----------25m/s
change per second = 5m/s
As you can see the speed changes at the rate of 5m/s per second so, the acceleration is 5m/s^2.
