Explanation:

acid is any substance that in water solution tastes sour, changes blue litmus paper to red, reacts with some metals to liberate hydrogen, reacts with bases to form salts, and promotes chemical reactions (acid catalysis).

The materials which taste sour due to the presence of chemicals is called Acid.

Examples: Lemon, Vinegar, Orange, tamarind, Amla, etc.

ᴍᴏʀᴇ ᴛᴏ ᴋɴᴏᴡ:

The term Acid has been derived from the Latin word ‘acidus’ which means ‘sour’.

All sour-tasting materials contains acids.

Acids are classified into two categories:

  1. Mɪɴʀʟ ɪs:

Acids, which are prepared from the minerals present in the earth are called mineral acids.

Example: Hydrochloride acid (HCI), Sulphuric acid, Nitric acid, sulphurous acid, etc.

2. Oʀɢɴɪ ɪs:

Acids, which are naturally occurring and are found in plants and animals are called organic acids.

example:

  • Guava contains oxalic acid.
  • Orange, Lemon & Amla contain citric acid.
  • Grapes, Tamarind & gooseberries contain tartaric acid.
  • Sour Milk contains lactic acid.
  • Vinegar contains acetic acid.
  • Sting of bees, red ants, wasps & stinging nettle contain formic acid (HCOOH) which causes shooting pain.
