If the precipitation has a pH less than 5.6, it is described as acid rain.

This situation occurs when oxides of Sulphur and nitrogen in the atmosphere combine with water vapour and form sulphuric acid and nitric acid respectively.

These precipitate as rain snow or fog. The main source of these oxides are combustion of fuels in the industries.
