Gaaes like carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, etc. are released in the air by factories, power houses and automobile exhausts. These gases mix with rain water and form acids. Thus, rain water becomes acidic. When this 'acid rain' falls on buildings, made of marble ( which is otherwise known as calcium carbonate ) , the acid reacts with marble. Acid rain is the main cause of yellowing of Taj Mahal.
