What is Acid rain ?
Answer : When water precipitates down in the form of rain , snow ,etc.and carries large amount of acid ,it is termed as Acid Rain.
Required Explanation :
Burning of carbonaceous fuels release carbon dioxide gas. This carbon dioxide dissolves in rain water to form carbonic acid which then falls down with rain water.
- CO2 + H2O ----> H2CO3
Further gases like sulphur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide are released from factories. These gases also dissolve in rain water and increase its acidity.
Chemical equation :
- SO2 + H2O ----> H2SO3
- 4NO2 + 2H2O + O2 ----> 4HNO3
Related information :
This acid rain corrodes buildings and monuments, especially those made of Limestone (CaCO3).Acid rain also damages plants and increases the acidity of the soil.

Acid rains are rains that is coming from the atmosphere which contains amounts of nitric and sulfuric acids. In simple the rain which is acidic in nature. Normally rains are mildly acidic which ranges from 5.3 to 6 in PH scale. When the rain water falls below this level then it is termed as acid rain. Rain water is made acidic by the pollutants present in the air as a result of fossil fuel and industrial combustion.
