Acid Rain Basics. ... Rain water becomes weakly acidic because carbon dioxide gas in the atmosphere reacts with water to form carbonic acid. But sulfur oxide and nitrogen oxide molecules resulting from industrial pollution and automobile exhaust react with rainwater to form strong acids 

chemicals react with the ones in the metal (iron) and corrode the structure away. it can damage buildings and pollute rivers which have life in them and kill the living species in the water damaged buildings, fallen down trees .
