Acid rain refers to the precipitation of acid in the form of raindrops. Sulfur and nitrogen dioxide are the two gases that cause acid rain.

  • When the pH of rainwater drops below 5.7, it is referred to as acid rain.
  • The rainwater turns acidic because of oxides of nitrogen and sulfur present in the atmosphere as pollutants.
  • These oxides react with atmospheric oxygen and moisture to form sulfuring and nitric acid.
  • The reactions are as follows:

        2 SO₂ (g) + O₂ + 2H₂O → 2H₂SO₄ (aq)

        4NO₂ (g) + O₂ + 2 H₂O → 4HNO₃ (aq)

  • Acid rain harms plants, buildings, and water bodies. Corroding of the Taj Mahal is due to acid rain.
