Actinomyces is a genus of the Actinobacteria class of bacteria. They are all gram-positive. Actinomycesspecies are facultatively anaerobic (except A. meyeri, an obligate anaerobe), and they grow best under anaerobic conditions.

Actinommycetes is a diverse and a large group of gram +ve,filamentous, branching bacilli. Actinommycetes organisms are bacteria and are usually handled in mycology as they are filamentous and may take few days to several weeks to grow.The most common organism in this group is Nocardia that is responsible to cause a variety of infections like Mycetoma.
