Chloroethane will be formed by the action of Cl₂ on ethane whereas there will be no action of HBr on ethane.

- Chlorine reacts with ethane in the presence of sunlight by the mechanism of  substitution reaction.

- This process is generally known as chlorination.

- The reaction can be shown as :

CH₃-CH₃ + Cl₂  → CH₃-CH₂Cl + HCl

- Whereas ethane is unreactive towards HBr.

- So there will be no action of it on ethane.
