Answer:

It is not only the moderately electronegative nonmetals like carbon and sulphur that are not attacked by hydrochloric acid. Even less reactive metals like copper and mercury behave in a similar manner.

Concentrated nitric and sulphuric acids are strong oxidising agents, especially in hot condition. In these acids, the central atoms-nitrogen and sulphur- are in their maximum oxidation states of +5 and +6 respectively. So, their reactions with nonmetals like carbon or sulphur are typical redox reactions in which such moderately electronegative nonmetals are forced to behave as reducing agents, as it happens with less electropositive metals like copper.

C + 4HNO3 = CO2 + 4NO2 + 2H2O

C + 2H2SO4 = CO2 + 2SO2 + 2H2O

Cu + 4HNO3 = Cu(NO3)2 + 2NO2 + 2H2O

Cu + 2H2SO4 = CuSO4 + 2SO2 + 2H2O
