What is action script? Why do we need it?

Action Script is known to be the scripting language which is made particularly for the adobe flash.

It is usually based upon the ECMA script and hence shares similarities with languages such as java script.

However, the action script is known as object oriented language but it is not considered as prototype similar to java script.
