Activation energy is the energy required to reach the transition state of a reaction, and for the reactant to get converted to product. Without reaching the transtition state, the reactant cannot get converted to product.

In terms of enzymes, enzymes act as biocatalysts and help lower the activation energy so that reactant (substrate) can get easily converted, and quickly, into product (broken down minerals).
