Active transport is the movement of molecules or ions against a concentration gradient (from an area of lower to higher concentration), which does not ordinarily occur, so enzymes and energy are required. Passive transport is the movement of molecules or ions from an area of higher to lower concentration.

Explanation:

Biology :

Passive Process - In this Process the particle (minerals) are transferred from a region of their higher concentrations to a region of their lower concentration without utilising energy. By this process water and dissolved minerals are absorbed. There are two types of active transport, osmosis and diffusion.

1) Osmosis - The movement of particles of water or minerals from a region of their higher concentration to a region of their lower concentration across a semi permeable membrane (eg. cell membrane) is called osmosis.

2) Diffusion - The movement of particles from a region of their higher concentration to a region of their lower concentration passing through a fully permeable membrane until the concentration in both the region become equal is called diffusion.

Active Transport : The movement of particles from a region of their lower concentration to a region of their higher concentration by utilising energy is called Passive transport. The energy is synthesized by respiration. By this process, salts like NPK (Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium) are absorbed by the plant.
