The spine of the cactus plants are not really the spines, they are leaves. Actually they get transformed from leaves to spines because of the environment and temperature of the environment in which they are grown. Normally they grows in hot temperatured places, like Deserts .There they suffered in too much heat as result the rate of transpiration is too high and to reduce the rate of transpiration the leaves transformed into spines.
