ADVANTAGES:

They are used in preparation of curd, bread, cake etc. (e. g)

the bacterium Lactobacillus promotes the formation of curd from milk.

The bacterium Renin is used in cheese production.

Yeast( saccharomyces cerevisiae) is used for the purpose of baking bread. Since, it is also known as ‘baker’s yeast’.

2 . They are used in the production of alcohol from :

Sugar or starch

Wine from fruit juice

By the process called fermentation.

3. In the cleaning of the environment by breaking down the organic waste into harmless and usable substances.(e. g)

Anaerobic bacteria degrade the animal dung into biogas and the left-over slurry can be used as manure.

4. Many microorganisms (bacteria, fungi and moulds) produce certain chemicals which inhibit the growth of some other microorganisms. Such chemical compounds are known as antibiotics. Penicillin, Streptomycin,Tetracycline, Erythromycin and Gramicidine are some common antibiotics which is used to cure many microbacterial diseases.

DISADVANTAGES:

It causes many types of diseases in humans.

Clostridium tetani is a pathogenic bacterium that causes tetanus.

AIDS that is caused by HIV virus.

Maleria is caused by parasite plasmodium.

Tuberculosis is caused by a bacterium-called Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

As you know, the living organisms which cannot seen by the naked eyes are called microorganisms or simply microbes.

Some microorganisms are helpful to us,whereas many of them are harmful because they cause many types of disease.

On the basis of their effect, they are divided into two categories :

Benificial effects contains friendly microbes (advantages)

Harmful effects contains harmful microbes (disadvantage)

ADVANTAGES:

They are used in preparation of curd, bread, cake etc. (e. g)

the bacterium Lactobacillus promotes the formation of curd from milk.

Tuberculosis is caused by a bacterium-called Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

2. It also cause diseases in animals such as;

Anthrax disease that is caused by bacterium can affect cattle, humans.

The disease cholera that is caused by bacterium can affect the poultry birds.

The disease Dermatitis caused by virus can affect the goat, sheep.

The disease Rinderpest caused by bacterium can affect cattle.

3. Some microorganisms also cause plant diseases.

(e.g), rust, smut, citrus canker, yellow vein mosaic are caused by microorganisms that can affect many plants

4. The microorganisms spoils the food(e.g)

The bacterium staphylococci causes food poisoning by producing a heat-resistant toxin in the food.

The bacterium Clostridium botulinum causes a rare, but dangerous form of food poisoning known as Botulism. Thus, microorganisms, spoil the food.
