Respiration

Respiration is the oxidative breakdown of the respiratory substrate:glucose in humans,in turn giving out energy. On the basis of their occurrence, respiration are of two types: Aerobic Respiration and Anaerobic Respiration

Aerobic Respiration

  • Aerobic Respiration occurs in the presence of oxygen

  • It occurs in both cytoplasm and mitochondria of the cell

  • It gives out from energy compared to anaerobic respiration, around 38ATP

  • Complete breakdown of the respiratory substrate

  • On oxidation, produces water and carbon-dioxide while releasing some heat energy

E.g., Humans

Anaerobic Respiration

  • It occurs in the absence of oxygen

  • Only occurs in the mitochondria of a cell

  • Lesser energy output compared to the latter: 2ATP

  • Incomplete breakdown of glucose

  • On oxidation,it either yields Lactic Acid or Ethanol with minimal energy

E.g, Yeast,Human Muscle Cells etc
