Respiration
Respiration is the oxidative breakdown of the respiratory substrate:glucose in humans,in turn giving out energy. On the basis of their occurrence, respiration are of two types: Aerobic Respiration and Anaerobic Respiration
Aerobic Respiration
- Aerobic Respiration occurs in the presence of oxygen
- It occurs in both cytoplasm and mitochondria of the cell
- It gives out from energy compared to anaerobic respiration, around 38ATP
- Complete breakdown of the respiratory substrate
- On oxidation, produces water and carbon-dioxide while releasing some heat energy
E.g., Humans
Anaerobic Respiration
- It occurs in the absence of oxygen
- Only occurs in the mitochondria of a cell
- Lesser energy output compared to the latter: 2ATP
- Incomplete breakdown of glucose
- On oxidation,it either yields Lactic Acid or Ethanol with minimal energy
E.g, Yeast,Human Muscle Cells etc
