Aerobic respiration is the aerobic catabolism of nutrients to carbon dioxide, water, and energy, and involves an electron transport system in which molecular oxygen is the final electron acceptor. Most eukaryotes and prokaryotes use aerobic respiration to obtain energy from glucose.

Aerobic respiration is the process that leads to complete oxidation of organic substances in the presence of Oxygen and releases CO2 water and a large amount of energy present in the substrate this type of respiration is most common in higher organisms.

For aerobic respiration to takes place within the mitochondria the final product of glycolysis pyruvate is transported from the cytoplasm into the mitochondria the crucial events in aerobic respiration are:-
- The complete oxidation of pyruvate by the stepwise removal of all hydrogen atoms living 3 molecules of CO2.
- The passing on of the electrons removed as part of the hydrogen atoms to molecular auto with simultaneous synthesis of ATP.
Reaction involved:-
C6H12O6 + 6O2 = 6CO2 + 6H2O + energy (as ATP).
