Aestivation

The mode of arrangement of sepals or petals in floral bud with respect to the other members of the same whorl is know as aestivation.

Types of Aestivations

valvate , twisted , imbricate , vexillary

Valvate

when sepals or petals in a whorl just touch one another without any overlapping .

eg: Calotropis

Twisted

When one margin of the appendage overlaps that of the next one and so on .

eg : China rose , lady's finger and cotton

Imbricate

when the margins of the appendages overlap one another, but not in a particular direction .

eg: Cassia and gulmohur

Vexillary

There are 5 petals. The largest overlaps the 2 lateral petals, which in turn overlaps the 2 smallest anterior petals.

eg : pea and bean flowers
