Our business depends on a steady, high-quality supply of agricultural crops like cocoa, wheat and many other commodities to create our delicious snacks. However, our global food system is facing numerous challenges that are weighing down on individual farmers and the land they use.

These challenges are complex, and call for solutions that require coordinated efforts by governments, industry, and scientific and environmental experts. Smallholder farming communities in particular need support to increase their resilience.

That is why we are using our company's reach and global presence to work together with outside experts to give farmers a voice.

Signature Programs

Our signature programs aim to make a positive impact on the farms, communities and environment where our main raw materials are grown: Cocoa Life and Harmony.

Cocoa Life is a holistic, verified program working to transform the lives and livelihoods of cocoa farmers, create thriving communities and inspire the next generation. Cocoa Life's $400 million, 10-year commitment aims to empower more than 200,000 farmers and more than 1 million people in cocoa farming communities in Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Indonesia, Brazil, the Dominican Republic and India.

Harmony, our wheat program in Europe, promotes biodiversity and good environmental practices in wheat production. Farmers in the Harmony program commit to following a charter of best agricultural practices. Today, 75% of our West European biscuits are made with Harmony wheat, and our goal is to increase to 100% of our biscuits across Europe (except Eastern Europe) by 2022. In North America, our wheat farmers are adopting innovative practices to optimize pesticide and fertilizer use, growing all the wheat we need for our Triscuits brand, with a lower environmental footprint.

Securing Key Raw Materials

Beyond our signature programs, we're embedding sustainability into our sourcing practices for other raw materials.

We're seeking more transparency, raising expectations of our suppliers and seeking to catalyze sector-wide change. Through this work we are addressing cross cutting themes such as good agricultural practices, deforestation, human and labor rights (including child labor), land rights, gender and environmental footprint.

Palm Oil: We are taking steps to ensure that the palm oil we buy is produced on legally held land, does not lead to deforestation or loss of peat land, respects human rights, including land rights, and does not use forced or child labor.

Paper packaging: We use recycled paper or paper from verified non-deforested sources in our packaging.

Collaborating For Change

Achieving widespread change across whole supply chains is more than Mondelez can do alone, so we collaborate with peer companies and expert organizations to help us on the journey.

Consumer Goods Forum: As members of the Consumer Goods Forum, we are signatories to its deforestation resolution which seeks to mobilize resources within our respective business to help achieve net deforestation by 2020 with a focus on four key commodities: palm oil, soya, beef and paper and board. In addition, we co-chair CGF's Palm Oil Working Group — which has published palm oil sourcing guidelines for member companies.

Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil: We serve on the Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil Board of Governors and seek to support reforms to make sustainable palm oil the norm.

Indonesia Palm Oil Platform: We work with the UN Development Programme and the Government of Indonesia to develop the Indonesia Palm Oil Platform, a multi-stakeholder forum coordinated by the government, which aims to create a national action plan for the sustainable development of palm oil.

Cocoa sustainability efforts: We join with partners in a range of initiatives to support sustainable cocoa production.
