Alginic acid, also called algin or alginate, is a polysaccharide distributed widely in the cell walls of brown algae, where through binding with water it forms a viscous gum.

Chemical formula: (C6H8O6)n

E number: E400 (thickeners,...)

A Gummy substance called algin, obtained from kelp, is used to thicken Ice creams, cosmetics and shaving cream. It is also used in the preparation of medicines and synthetic fibres. Iodine and potassium are other substances obtained from kelp.
