In 1857, Sir Syed Ahmed Khan started the Aligarh Movement in Uttar Pradesh for the spread of modern education and social refprm among Muslims. Over the years, Muslims had come to be regarded with suspicion by the British and their position in society had fallen which deeply disturbed Syed Ahmed Khan. And it became his mission to raise the status of Muslims in Indian society.
