Alpha Decay

Alpha decay is a nuclear process ,where some heavy radioactive atom decays by emitting alpha particle, which is, in fact , the nucleus of Helium(He),it is made of two protons and two neutrons.

Therefore the product atom will be with Z-2,and A-4,where Z is the atomic number i.e,. the protons number and A is the mass number=Z+N where N is the neutrons number. Or we can describe it in other way ,

Some nuclei have a helium nucleus (an alpha particle) sort of orbiting around the rest of the nucleus; the alpha doesn’t have enough energy to escape over the top of the combined nuclear and coulomb potentials, but if the barrier is skinny enough in radius, it can tunnel out quantum mechanically.

This is usually what’s happening in alpha decay.

It is a type of radioactive decay in which an atomic nucleus emits an alpha particle and decays into different atomic nucleus, with a mass number that is reduced by four and an atomic number that is reduced by two
