What is alternation of generation in the life cycle of a plant?

Plant’s life cycle has two stages.
1) Sporophyte
2) Gametophyte

The diploid sporophytic generation goes under meiosis and produces haploid spores.

These spores after mitosis give rise to ‘Gametophytic generation’ which is haploid as well.

The Gametophytic generation produces male and female haploid gametes.

Then these gametes fuse to form a diploid zygote.

The zygote then gives rise to diploid ‘sporophytic generation.’

In this way, both the generations keep alternating with each other.

This is called Alternation of generation.
