What is alum and how can it be used for water purification? And also tell that on what principle does a water purifier work?

When alum (Aluminium Sulphate) is added to raw water, it reacts with the bicarbonate alkalinities present in the water and forms a gelatinous precipitate. This floc attracts other fine particles and suspended material in raw water, and settles down at the bottom of the container.
