Ammonia is a compound of hydrogen and nitrogen gases.Ammonia oxidation is the reaction of ammonia with oxygen.. Ammonia is a colorless gas . It is lighter than air, and its vapor density is 8.5. This is most soluble in water. Aqueous solution of ammonia called ammonia liquor is alkaline in nature. Joseph Priestley was the first ammonium chloride, ammonia gas produced by heating with lime. Ammonium chloride and faded in the laboratory by heating a mixture of lime, dried ammonia gas is produced.

Aim : To identify ammonia .


Materials :

  • beaker containing HCl .
  • a glass rod .

Procedure.

  • Dip the glass rod in HCl .
  • Bring the glass rod near ammonia.

Observation :


  • If you see that the glass rod shows dense white fumes , then it is ammonia .
  • This way we can test the ammonia.

Conclusion

Thus we learnt the test for ammonia.

NH₃ + HCl =====> NH₄Cl
