amphoteric compound is a special type of compound which behave acid as well as base . example :- Al2O3 , H2O etc are amphoteric compound .

how H2O is an acid as well as base ??
if we read Brownsted - Lowery concept
we understand how water is amphoteric.

★ according to this concept , an acid is a substance which has tendency to give H+ . and a base is substance which have tendency to accept H+ .
now,
see this reaction
HCO3^- + H2O → H3O+ + CO2^-2
here you see H2O gain H+ ion so, here H2O behaves as base.

now
see this reaction ,
NH3 + H2O →NH4+ + OH-
here H2O loss H+ ion so, here H2O behaves as a acid .

hence, above explanation it is clear that how H2O is an acid as well as base .
