In chemistry, an amphoteric compound is a molecule or ion that can react both as an acid as well as a base. The word is derived from the Greek word amphoteroi meaning "both". Many metals (such as copper, zinc, tin, lead, aluminium, and beryllium) form amphoteric oxides or hydroxides.

The oxides which behave as acids as well as base are called amphoteric oxide e.g., Al2O3 and ZnO are amphoteric oxides, they both react with acid as well as base to give salt and water.
