Mutations can happen naturally and due to the effect of some agents. These are known as mutagenic agents and they increase the frequency of mutation. Mutagenic agents can be chemicals or rays.

Chemicals such as mustard gas, caffeine and colchicine induce an increase in mutation.
Radiations like X-rays. gamma rays and UV-rays can also do this.
These mutations sometimes result in abnormalities.

Physical, chemical and biological factors are going to increase the frequency of a mutation.

Explanation:

  • There are some physical factors such as x-ray UV rays and infrared rays which decreases the duration of mutation.
  • This is because they have certain type of energy which breaks the chemical bond which are present in DNA molecule.
  • In addition to this other factors are also present such as certain chemicals like cyanide which chemically react with nitrogen and hydrogen bonds present in the DNA molecule Biological factors such as viruses can also change the DNA molecule.
  • This occurs when virus is like Epstein-Barr virus and Human Papilloma virus attacks the cells.
  • These viruses are known to cause some cancer due to mutation of the DNA sequence.
