Alpha particles are positively charged particles which are given out as radiations by a radioactive substance. These particles consists of two protons and two neutrons and they look identical to a doubly ionised helium atom.

An alpha particle is a helium nucleus emitted by radioactive materials.

It has a relative charge of +2, a high mass (compared to beta particles) and a strong ionizing effect. Alpha particles are not very penetrating and can be stopped by a thick sheet of paper or skin. They can also be deflected by magnetic fields, as well as electric fields.
