WHAT ARE ASTEROIDS ?

  • An asteroid is a large rock in outer space. They can be very large , while others are as small as a grain of sand. Astronomers, group asteroids into different categories based on the way they reflect sunlight.

  • There care currently 5000 asteroids across the Earth's orbit, and some of them are very close. But don't worry, asteroids and comets only hit the Earth every 100 million years or so. And there is no probability right now.

  • Asteroids are mostly made of rock. And are mostly found in the Asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.

  • Asteroids are also known as "minor planets."

WHEN ASTEROIDS COLLIDE ?

  • The collision of asteroids is a rare but fantastic event. When two asteroids collide, they can break each other into pieces. However the chance of collision is minimal.

HOW MANY ASTEROIDS ARE THERE ?

  • There are million of smaller asteroids that we are yet to see, because they are too tiny.
  • Due to their smaller size, asteroids do not have enough gravity to pull themselves into the shape of ball.
  • There are thought to be billions of asteroids in the solar system.
