Atlas is a collection of maps. It comes from the name of a mythological Greek figure, Atlas. As punishment for fighting with the Titans against the gods, Atlas was forced to hold up the planet Earth and the heavens on his shoulders. Because Atlas was often pictured on ancient books of maps, these became known as atlases.

Answer:

An atlas is a book of maps. It has a collection of maps covering the entire world. The physical and political features of the world as well as individual countries are presented through maps. Some maps are based on themes such as climate, wildlife, resources and certain population realated features of particular countries or the entire world.

The first book of map collection was published by Mercator in 16th century. It was named 'Atlas' as it's cover page had the picture of the Greek mythological giant 'Atlas' who is believed to support the earth on his shoulders
