An atlas is a collection of maps, named after the titan giant(according to Greek mythology), Atlas.
Atlas, the Giant is often seen holding the globe, which gives this book of maps the name.
According to Greek mythology, Atlas was meant the hold the sky forever, on his shoulders.
The maps show various features, details, climate and the topography og the place indicated.
The first modern atlas printed dates back to 1570 and was printed by a cartographer-Abraham Ortelius.
There are different types of atlases available today which include the reference atlases, travel atlases etc.

The Atlas has found itsel to be of great use in everyday life not only to geographers, but also to students, teachers and the common man

HOPE THIS HELPS :)
