ATOMS

All forms of matter such as elements, compounds or mixture are made up of atoms. Thus, we can say that atoms are the building blocks of all matter around us. Atoms are so small that we cannot see them even with a microscope. Now, it has been proved that atoms are further made up of three basic particles called protons, electrons and neutrons. There are as many kinds of atoms as there are elements. Since an atom has no overall charge, the number of electrons outside the nucleus is equal to the number of protons inside the nucleus. The atoms of most of the elements are very reactive and hence, do not exist in free state (Figure). But a few exist in combination with the atoms of same element or different element. However, the atoms of noble gases like helium, neon, argon, krypton etc. , are capable of independent existence. Thus, we can define atom as,

"The smallest particle of an element that can take part in a chemical reaction."

Atom are the smallest particles through which matter is made up of . It is very small in size . The whole universe is made up of atoms .

When atoms constitute together they make a group called molecules
