Ion is any atom or a group of atoms carrying a positive or negative charge due to loss or gain of electrons.

Two types of ions

Cation - the positively charged ions e. g. - Na1+.

Anion - the negatively charged ions e. g. - Cl1-.

Valence - is the number of electrons an atom can donate or accept so as to achieve stable electronic configuration of the nearest noble gases.

Valence electrons - electrons which are present in last shell.
