The aurora borealis (northern lights) formwhen charged particles emitted from the sun during a solar flare penetrate the earth's magnetic shield and collide with atoms and molecules in our atmosphere. These collisions result in countless little bursts of light, called photons, which make up the aurora.

an Aurora is a natural electrical phenomenon characterized by the appearance of streamers of reddish or greenish light in the sky, especially near the northern or southern magnetic pole. The effect is caused by the interaction of charged particles from the sun with atoms in the upper atmosphere. In northern and southern regions it is respectively called aurora borealis orNorthern Lights and aurora australis orSouthern Lights.

The Aurora Borealis is made when storms on the the sun form solar winds, or large streams of charged particles streaming toward the earth. These streams could have upward of ten million megawatts of electrical power
