Echo is the bouncing back of sound waves. It is similar to reflection of light.
Sound waves bounce back on a hard surface. So to reduce echo, just cover the room, place with things that do not let sound to be reflected clearly like curtain, carpet and special foam made for preventing echo.
Real life example: If you go in a completely empty room and make any sound, you will be able to hear it echo. If the room is filled with things like furniture and/or curtain etc. the echo would be gone. This is because flat walls easily reflect sound waves and you can hear echos.
Hopefully, this explains what you wanted to know. I just wrote from top of my head so it isn't as concise to be used as a definition.
