Electric bulbs are filled with non reactive nitrogen gas so that the filament does not react with it and the life span of the bulb increases.

In light bulbs, the tungsten filament is heated to the high temperature so as to emit visible light. And, to avoid tungsten filament catching fire at these high temperatures, it is sealed in an oxygen-free casing. However, if a vacuum is created to avoid tungsten filament combustion, it can result in evaporation of tungsten at such high temperatures. Thus, an electric bulb is filled with inert gases like argon to avoid loss of tungsten due to evaporation. Moreover, as argon is an inert gas, it prevents combustion .
