Electromagnetic is a solenoid with a soft iron core placed inside it. When current is passed through the solenoid.the soft iron core became a temporary magnet.

Therefore, it attracts any metal (mostly)

It is temporary magnets so it has soft iron in it there are many other magnets also out there including permenant magnet made up of steel inside and provides magnetic effect lifetime but gradually loses power it can also be used to generate magnetic fields and to make temporary magnets.
