Esters are compounds derived from the combination of a carboxylic acid and alcohol, along with an acid catalyst in a reaction called esterification. Because molecules of water are eliminated in esterification, it is a type of condensation reaction. Smaller esters are soluable in water, but as a general rule, the longer the chain, the less soluable an ester is.

It is used in the preparation of soaps.

Ester →  Carboxylic acid + Alcohol

CH3COOC2H5  NaOH → CH3COOH + C2H5OH
