A splinter party is when members of a main political party break away to form their own party usually stressing the importance of one specific issue. In reality, the two major parties are a coalition of political issues with like minded voters. When one issue doesn't seem like a priority to the major party or when there's disagreement, members may break off. For example, in the late 1940's, the Democratic Party saw members break away to form a group known as the 'Dixiecrats.' These were mostly southern Democrats who wanted to maintain racial segregation policies, something the Democratic Party was moving away from. Although short lived, splinter parties in general can have implications at the polls as they are able to take votes away from their parent political party, potentially helping the opposition.
